How do I transfer campaigns to a new Google Ads account?
This articles outlines the steps to follow when campaigns need to be transferred over to a new Google Ads account for dental clients.
If an account has been live for one week or longer with 0 impressions, it is often due to a platform bug.
Before proceeding, quickly review all settings to verify nothing obvious is causing the issue (i.e. extremely narrow location targeting, restricted ad schedule, missing keywords, excessively low bids, ad disapprovals, or account suspension warnings).
If everything appears correct, follow the process below to create a new account and transfer everything over.
1. Highlight on Launch Tracker
If we have confirmed that there is a platform bug affective the account, please highlight it in red on the Launch Tracker to indicate that there was an issue identified.
2. Confirm Client Payment Details
We need CC info submitted by the client before creating a new account.
- Request that the client submits their CC information.
- Once confirmed, proceed to create the new Google Ads account.
3. Create the New Google Ads Account
In the Dental Marketing MCC under team@dentalmarketing.com:
- Go to Sub-account settings
- Click + Create New Account
- Enter:
- Account Name (i.e. Practice Name - NEW)
- Type: Google Ads account
- Correct Country
- Correct Timezone
- Correct Currency
- Complete the reCAPTCHA and click Save & Continue
Next, set up the payment profile:
- Create a new payment profile
- Select Organization as the profile type
- Enter the practice name as the Organization Name and the Legal Name
- Enter the practice address and zip code
- Add the newly submitted CC info
4. Pause Campaigns and 'ZZZ' the Old Account
-
Before copying anything, pause all active campaigns in the old account so they do not serve once the new account is live.
- Update the account name in Google Ads to begin with 'ZZZ -'.
5. Copy the Old Account Into the New Account (Google Ads Editor)
Using Google Ads Editor:
- Copy all campaigns from the old account to the new account
- Copy over all labels
- Copy the call extension
- Post and ensure all imported campaigns transfer properly
- Enable the campaigns
6. Rebuild Required Settings (per Google Ads Launch Process)
Review and update all account- and campaign-level settings to match our launch process:
- Add account-level tracking template: {lpurl}?keyword={keyword}&matchtype={matchtype}&network={network}&adposition={adposition}&device={device}
- Make sure auto-tagging is turned on, call reporting and call recording is turned on, auto-apply is turned off, and customer match is turned off at the account-level
- Set the marketing objective for all campaigns to 'Leads'
- Set advanced bid adjustment to 15%
-
Add negative keyword exclusion lists
-
Re-add any account-level negative keywords from the old account
-
Re-create the Shared Budget
-
Re-add the location extension under team@dentalmarketing.com
7. Re-Establish Conversion Tracking
- Re-create all conversion actions in the new Google Ads account
- Update the Global Tag, conversion IDs, and conversion labels inside GTM and publish changes
- Update the Matrix accordingly
- Follow the Google Ads Launch Process documentation as needed
8. Connect Tools
- Unlink the old account and link the new account to Optmyzr
- Apply the correct Optmyzr tags
- Add all budget scripts, then authorize and run them to confirm they function properly
- Unlink the old account and link the new one to:
- Admin portal of our dashboard
- Google Analytics
9. Grant Client Access
- Grant the client’s email Admin access to the account
- Grant Admin Payment User access and set them as the Primary Contact
- Notify the OB specialist or SA that two invitations (account access + payment access) were sent to the client and should be accepted
10. Check On Performance
-
Set reminders to check on performance after a couple of days to make sure the new account is generating impressions.
-
If everything looks good, update the account name in Google Ads and Optmyzr to remove 'NEW'.
